Gouache miniatures in antique and handmade frames

I paint gouache miniatures on dark grounds and finish each one inside an antique or hand-built ceramic frame. Everything is small, roughly the size of a hand, so it asks you to come close.

Water Gardens

The subjects are things that stop me on a walk. Water moving. Leaves catching sun.

Dark Ground Florals: forget me nots 2025

Series II

Flowers painted directly onto a black ground, with no drawing underneath. Each blossom is a single loaded stroke, so the ground stays visible between them and the whole surface keeps a feeling of night air.

Series III

Forest Interiors

Woodland interiors are the hardest of the three series to keep quiet. The temptation is to paint every leaf. What actually reads as a forest is a few sharp trunks in front of a mass that stays unresolved.

Process

Some frames are antiques, cleaned and regilded in the studio. Others are hand-built in ceramic. Either way the frame is finished before the painting starts.

About

I am Nergiz, a painter based in Passau, Germany, working in gouache at miniature scale. My paintings are botanical and landscape subjects built up on dark grounds, and each one is presented in a frame I have either sourced or made, so that the painting and its housing are finished together as a single object.

My subjects come from close observation of gardens, water and woodland, with a debt to nineteenth century garden painting. I was born in Turkey and live in Germany.

I take a small number of commissions each year. Most begin one of two ways: a place someone wants painted, or a frame they already own and want filled.
